About

My name is Lily Myers Kaplan. While I've been a maker all my life, the moment I wrapped my hands around a messy clump of clay in the Autumn of 2023 I fell in love with ceramics and with molding clay into forms that honor the beauty of nature. There are no straight lines in nature, and my pottery reflects the natural beauty of these perfect-imperfections.

I've long been inspired by ancient ruins in the Four Corners region of the US, where petroglyphs and pictographs were carved and drawn onto rock by artists of a different time. Standing before the Indigenous art never fails to invoke awe, stretching my mind and opening my heart. For nomadic people, these symbols are a form of communication between communities and often document significant astrological events or the transition of one season to the next.

Interpreting these primitive yet powerful images into my own unique patterns of straight or wavy lines, circles, dots and spirals painted or carved on the clay is a compelling practice that builds bridges between the spirit of the land, the spirit of Indigenous humanity, and the spirit of that which is invisible to the eye but which connects us all.

Like in nature, my work is ever-evolving as my relationship with clay grows and expands. Yet, always my hope and intention is that every piece I make invites connection with the earth and the ancient peoples of the lands we inhabit, while bringing joy (or a touch of awe)  into your everyday.
